middle of nowhere in France
cycling in the UK, was that i had to faff around with a huge cycle lock every time i went into a shop or left bike for a couple of minutes. Never felt the need to use a lock here in France. I do lock it outside the bigger supermarket sometimes, but not always.
Bet the bloody thing gets nicked now!!
Talking of which, police found the ba****ds that stole my purse last Christmas !!!

You didn't "have" to, you choose to. I've never used a lock. My choice.

OP, if you really are in the middle of nowhere, I'm not surprised!

I use a lock with my usual London bike, a folder which technically doesn't need it but weighs too much to be swinging it from my arm everywhere. Though the lock won't survive a brute force attack, it's done its job for the past 7 or 8 years.

"Good" (more expensive) bikes never get locked if I can help it. They either come inside (you may be surprised how many places will let you bring your bike in - never hurts to ask) or never get my eyes taken off them if there's an avenue of thievery my eyes can't constantly surveil.

Had my first road bike stolen from outside Woolies when I was 12ish. I trusted people and didn't use a lock. Now, I never leave my bike unattended and never use my bike for shopping.

I remember taking my bike to the corner shop to run an errand for my mum. I was about 12.
I left it outside but realised I couldn't carry the milk etc home on the bike.
So I walked home.
I forgot about the bike. Until tea-time. I rushed back, and there was my bike, exactly where I left it.
Couldn't do that these days!
I take my hybrid to the shops as it doesn't have quick release, and use a hefty gold secure lock.
I still worry about leaving her though

The police did an experiment in Barnstaple a couple of years ago.
They put a half decent bike in the town centre, locked it with a cheap 'Pound Land' cable lock and then left it.
A week later it was still there, untouched..........
I couldn't quite make out what message to take from that.

Albeit with respect to them for publishing it, I was much amused by an article in London's Evening Standard a few years ago (a sort of evening shot of Daily Wailery for people who didn't get enough this morning) where they leaned a bike up against some railings in the middle of London and kept an eye. The bike was left untouched throughout the day, apart from one point when it fell over, and a passer by carefully picked it up and leaned it back against the railings.

Chain was slack.
