Well, okay, I know I'm mad anyway but would I even madder than normal...

As the year is slowly drawing to a close, and faced with the prospect of yet another boring and depressing NYE either alone or with family I don't particularly get along with anymore, I was pondering what I could do when I thought about throwing the bike in the car and booking myself into my favourite hostel for a few days over NYE (it is open all year round) and spending it doing a little leisurely walking or cycling along the coast. Obviously weather may play a role in this.

I was surprised to see on their website that there are only a few beds left so I am obviously not alone in wanting to spend NYE in a fairly remote coastal location. I would imagine they are probably group(s) however. Has anyone else ever done a solo hostel trip over NY? Would I stand out like a sore thumb as billy-no-mates and feel uncomfortable?

Never done that but love the idea! I've given up on NYE these days and it's mainly to do with the false environment, must enjoy thing. I think you'll be fine though. My Mum always goes on holiday by herself & loves it. She'll either make a handful of new and more like minded friends, or just spend time doing what she enjoys and I think that's a fair indication. Be warned though - people do tend to drift towards a loner, so you may need to plan escape routes if it's alone time you're craving, but I'd say go for it mate.

Go for it. If you'd be alone anyway, then why not be alone somewhere different, having had a day exploring?

I'm sure if you discovered that the other residents were nice, you could make yourself amenable to them and join in, if not, sit yourself in a corner with a book and enjoy being on your own.

I'm not necessarily seeking solitude, I would be more than happy to join if I found people I liked and could spend time with and wouldn't mind me joining in.

Half way there
are you sure the hostel hasn't been group booked? I would check that out just in case.

as for NYE alone, why not? bung the bike in and you have an escape if the crowd are dull or not what you fancy getting involved with. Buy some decent lights and ride through the new year, I think there may be a thread regarding lights somewhere........

best of luck whatever you decide.

We've taken to going to bed early on New Year's Eve, then getting up and driving out somewhere nice to watch the first sunrise of the year. Much nicer than all that enforced fun, and possibly more meaningful, if you're of a romantic mindset.

Go.

What a great idea. Though knowing my luck, it'll probably be raining on 1 Jan '15. Must do that at some point this winter though. There's so much scenery around here that I only ever see when the sun's facing one direction. Would be great to experience it in a different light, both metaphorically and literally.

Only if you want to feel like that.

I wouldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks if I wanted to do it myself.

You never know, the other people who are there might be ok.
