I used to do pub quizzes quite often years ago... it's not uncommon for a particular pub to have one team or player that always seems to win.

It also wasn't uncommon for one of the people i quizzed with to text people the questions, which used to drive me up the wall. If you can't play in the spirit of the game then don't play.

We went to one once and my partner was googling answers. I told her that's out of order, especially as there was a £30 prize for the winners. Having said that, the quiz was a shambles. Answers to questions were wrong, there was a forces/ navy question and they read out the wrong answer. There were several ex navy peeps in the quiz and it turned into them educating the quiz master.

I got zero on the quiz.

If I entered a quiz I wouldn't cheat. I know that I'd be doomed to being rubbish so I wouldn't bother with cheating. I don't know anything about anything apart from a few obscure areas that won't come up. I'm not bad at Shakespeare questions provided they are easy and superficial, which they often are.

hmm I got 0 out of 5 and Im usually quite good at pub quiz questions, without cheating, honest, maybe I need more alcohol to help loosen the brain cells ^_^

but yeah I do think theres alot of cheating that goes on thesedays with phones, and even these smart watches they were using in this case, pubs are often full of nooks and crannies and corners where the quizmaster cant keep an eye on what people are doing, Ive known some people even just take the questions list, pop to the loo, and magically come back with the answers...

and Ive been at several quizzes where Ive thought at least one team had to be cheating, because they just won everyweek, which ironically is what puts people turning up for them and then the quiz tends to die as a thing, so theyre just hastening the end for everyone.

I think the last one I did with a group of friends, we thought we were doing pretty good, hitting about 80-85% of the questions, and they were pretty hard obscure questions in alot of the cases, you needed a wide range of knowledge, and the picture round you had to name the actor, the role, the film and the year it came out, and any part wrong ended in nil points.

we werent even in the top 5 teams at the end, and the team that won got one question wrong out of 120 odd questions, which seemed statistically quite implausible to me.

Ive seen some quizzes try to even up the likelihood of cheating affecting the results, they have a drawing contest, where you have to draw a picture of something, and it gets subjectively marked often to simply how amusing it is, which you know I can see why they do it, but it changes it from being a quiz to like a completely random thing thats no fun imo.

For the "who is third longest reigning monarch of England/UK" I'm claiming half a point because my answer was actually the 4th longest reigning. So I was close-ish. I didn't have a clue about any of the others.

One local pub got round the phone-cheating issue by conducting the quiz on everyone's phone via an app. Multiple choice answers on the screen with a time limit and 'fastest finger first'. No time to cheat and even if there was, the people who knew the answers would always answer quickest.

...

One pub quiz i used to frequent was on a Sunday evening. The quizmaster took all their questions from 15to1 and Eggheads the previous week, and once we'd sussed that out... we won quite regularly.

Another pub quiz put last week's winning team on a -10 deficit to stop the same team winning every week, but even with that, The Old Gits still won very frequently.
