Would you get your cycling badge at Scouts?

We tended to do very boring and girly guide badges like cookery and and the secretary badge.

Our Guide leader was very officious. We didn't really have much fun TBH!

Ours would flirt with all the fathers when we were picked up. It was mortifying! Our assistant guide leader, Bronwyn, was wonderful and was a lot more fun but she was only every other week.

Our scout cycling badge was gained automatically when we passed our cycling proficiency test.

Same here for the cub scout cycling badge, so I got mine when I was five. Thankfully, no-one asked me to adjust any gears or most of the nearest town would likely have been destroyed.

To much preoccupation with helmets. You'd think that the Scout Association would try to shy away from people's preconceptions about Scout Masters.

Interestingly it doesn't say "thou must wear a helmet", it only says "check and adjust your cycle helmet" and "Show an understanding of the Highway Code, including road signs and helmet use".

On the other hand, Policy Organisation and Rules, says "Cycle safety helmets must be worn by all cyclists in all organised Scout cycling events, except in the case of 9.71b."

When I run my Scout bike weekends I give them a talk about the efficacy of polystyrene vs 40t truck and an emphasis on not riding like an eejit.

They have to 'earn' the badges, and got his Chief Scout awards a couple of years ago, aged 11 nearly 12 at the time ! They work them hard at our Pack !

is translated as indexing I would still fail. Tis the only thing I am totally useless at! Still decathlon only charge £4.99 per derailleur and our's has a really good bike mechanic there...

As for girl guides - I quit after we did flower arranging as one of our badges. My uncle was the venture scout leader and despite my age (way too young) I would go out hiking with them instead. Much more fun and interesting.

I try and make sure all my Cubs leave me with their Chief Scouts Silver, the highest award they can achieve as a Cub. This does mean some effort from them, and support from the parents too. Miles off topic I know, but if they want the CSS award, they need to do at least 2 nights camping, and often these are their first ever nights away from home without mum & dad. I, and my other leaders, generally get very little sleep on camp!

I'm 'lucky' enough to be Cub Scout Leader (or Akela) at our local Cub pack, and will be doing the cyclist activity badge with them this year. Nothing too onerous, and should be quite fun

We used to have a biennial sponsored cycle ride and it was a big fundraiser. Unfortunately we have a number of Cubs and Scouts and parents who don't wear helmets and we had to exclude them from the activities.

We no longer perform the ride as it excludes too many people.

The Scouts put a load of them through the Chief Scout Gold award - we had by far the youngest lot at the presentation, as they had done alot at cubs too. Got their awards from Head Honco of Manchester Met Police ! My daughter now goes to Scouts even though she is a girly girl. found Brownies too boring. The Scout Group now has nearing equal boys and girls, which is amazing as it was just one or two a few years back.

We had some Beavers with us on District Camp last year, they all survived OK, must have been shattered! The Cubs just seemed to spend the night eating sweets, I hate to think what the Scouts were up to....

so no choice of how many fingers for straight on? shame I do so love asking motorists who hassle me when I am going straight on if it is one finger or two... (long story if you don't know it, but I was not in the mood for an argumentative show off driver that day!)

I was going to say that we don't do girls.... but it could be taken the wrong way!

Our Group can't take girls as all the Scout Leaders and Cub Scout Leaders are male

We have steadfastly refused until we can have a female leader at the meetings
