Would You Let Your Kids Look After the Home for 2 Weeks?

My eldest son (who is a complete bugger) has looked after the house for 2 weeks each summer since he was 17, that's 5 years now. I am always surprised to find it still standing when we get back and know for sure somebody else does a manic clean up before we return. No problems.

Reminds me of the time my wife went to Australia for a month, which must be 15 years ago now because my son was very young at the time. She was amazed when she got home to find the place in such good order.

I'm just glad she didn't get back a day earlier!

We have done. no problems and even money left over from what we left them.


Me on the other hand when left at home for a weekend as a 16 year old...... small party amongst a select group of friends I thought I could trust. The end of the story was the Police arriving at 3am to remove the knife wielding maniac that the rest of us had jumped from the garage roof and sought shelter with the next door neighbours to get away from. You think you know someone! My folks were surprisingly ok with it & that taught me a lesson in calm parenting that I've carried through with my kids.

Left my son aged 17 for the weekend.
The house was suspiciously much cleaner and tidier that we left it when we got back.
All the waste paper bins had been double lined with plastic bags. Easier to clear up if someone is sick in them!
The downstairs toilet was, however, at a slight angle!

I think I'd trust my son aged 17 except that he would probably starve. But it's irrelevant because I know he'd be terribly lonely so I wouldn't do it.

My youngest son sounds quite similar. Mine is ...how can I put it...a bit of a non conformer..a renegade, but we always left him, usually with permission to have his girlfriend stay for the 2 weeks, no problems with how he treated the place, I think he actually appreciated the trust and enjoyed the time to do as he pleased.
Every year, from 20 to 28, no problems at all.

Do it all the time. Have done so since they were 15 & 16. Trick is to be very clear about when you are coming home and issue warnings/reminders as you return.

Nice to hear, I think it my MIL who does the cleaning the day before we get back, it would provide an opportunity for her to get to look in every cupboard and drawer.............

Yes , not because they are angels but because I have taught them a bit of respect. When I was 20 my parents went to Hawaii for 3 weeks. They came back to a cleaner house. No parties I just kept place as I would like it .

It's not OCD . It's just having things done properly !
