I've worked in the Motor industry Electronic fuel injection business for thirty two years.

I'm not adverse to technology.
I've just seen so much utter crap being delivered to Jaguar and Land Rover it simply destroys my confidence in electronics manufacture.

I won't say who the suppliers are but the clues are "Robert" and "Nippon".

Road bike brake-lever bodies commonly house the gear shifting mechanism.

Ah! You learn something new every day! ;) I've only ever ridden bikes with brake levers and separate thumbshifters.

There are some out there who are terrified of hydraulic brakes as they think the hoses can be snagged on trees and you'll lose all braking power!:biggrin:

Hydraulics are the dog's nads! I wish Giant had stuck 'em on my hybrid as well as my MTB! Unfortunately, there's no caliper mounts on my hybrid either.

Wonder what the forums said in the days when someone suggested putting rubber tyres on bikes and filling them with air!

They probably said something along the lines of what an immediately tenable good idea they were, delivering a tangible benefit at reasonable cost; a real leap forward solving a real problem.

Entirely unlike this.

Mavic Zap was brilliant. It failed commercially because a GAN team mechanic butchered it on a TdF bike for it's international launch. It failed, the peleton rejected it. Mavic were mortified with embarrassment and pulled it. I had an opportunity to see it up close C1993 when I helped fit it to a bike for a review in Bicycling magazine and was very impressed. I still wish they had produced a mountain bike version.

Anyone remember Shi**no Airway? The compressed air shifter. It sank without trace too.

Shame they rejected the wireless idea and went wired. Not only would wireless look cooler, but you could build something that could change other people's gears as you cycled past. Hours of fun.

Cyclists are a Conservative bunch.

Shimano dont seem to do Turkey's, the technology is tried and tested in other applications, look at all the crap cras have fitted that gets mucky, hot and vibrated, its not that complex, Stepper motors, sensors, batteries and some software to control it all.

Its not like our cable operated ones never go wrong, never chunter away between gears, never spit the chain off etc.

With wireless you'd need two large batteries for the servos on both changers - not totally practical.

I like the idea of it, but you'd cry if you smashed up the brake lever......TBH, I'd cry if I smashed up any of my 7400 series Dura Ace, never mind the Di2......

It also looks as though Di2 is robust enough to be butchered - anyone seen the arrangement Wiggin's Team Mechanics did to his TT bike levers, just so they were better for climbing on Stage 1.......

I'm sure it works beautifully for a while ... but then what happens when it starts getting old, and then one day ... just one day ... you are hurtling towards a busy junction, you pull heartily on the brakes ... and the thing fails on you?

At least with cables you can check 'em and see when they are getting knackered!

Why mess about with half a system ... go the whole hog
