Hi I was knocked off my bike on Friday morning and it doesnt look good it was one I put together some years ago one of the first aluminium frames a shogun from America. I will have to put a claim in but not sure how I can value my old bike it cost a lot at the time of making and was still in good condition but how do I get a value now that the insures will pay?

Look to see what similar bikes fetch on eBay, forums etc?

There's one here for example

Are the parts ok or is the whole bike totalled?

Just tell them what you think it was worth with evidence and then argue with them. They'll always try it on, stick to your guns

A new aluminium roadbike with Claris/Sora can be got for £300-400, so that's the minimum I'd be seeking in compensation

Also, keep all receipts for any mileage/public transport you use that you would have ordinarily done on the bike and submit as part of the claim

If injured, strongly recommend you seek legal advice, this is simpler if a British Cycling/LCC/CTC member

the grade of aluminium can become important; make sure that this is emphasised so that you can't be fobbed off with a cheapo 7005 frameset. i had to make a claim when my 531 steel bike was written off, and i pointed out that that grade of steel had essential characteristics. i also got a lbs to declare the frameset dead and quote for like-for-like replacement, which came to a lot as 531 frames are not made for mass market any more.

the advice about a good solicitor is right.
