I just had my bike serviced as I had a problem with the gears, it is only 3 months old.
I got it back and they had changed the gear cable gears are better but still not good.
I am not so fussed about that but I don't understand is why it is harder to pedal now?
It feels like I have gained another chainring or like I had only been using the second one and now I am using the third?
I've never taken it out of the third one so I don't know what's going on?
What could make it feel like this?

Cable could be too tight. Can you engage all your gears and all 3 front rings.
I would go back and show them

do the wheels turn freely, do the cranks spin freely, are the tyres at a good pressure?

Yep nothing rubbing, wheels turn freely tires pressures are correct?
Yep gears all change just not precise with one click like they should be.

The crap they used on the chain wouldn't have an effect would it?

Do you know what "crap" they used on your chain?

I recently tried chainsaw oil, after reading about it on here, and it was like pedalling through treacle. I removed and cleaned the chain then relubed with normal oil. Once refitted it all felt better. Cycleogical? Maybe, and I am not going to enter into a debate about chainsaw oil or chain lubes!

I don't know what is was but there was way to much on as the excess hadn't been wiped off.
It is really shiny and tacky to the touch.

I haven't got any brake cleaner, will white spirits be any good for cleaning the chain?

Just use your existing oil, apply to chain and wipe off. The sticky lube is likely to be a heavy duty one. It's wont make the bike slower.

If the wheels and cranks spin, it's probably your legs.... LOL

Cleaned and reoiled the chain, I'll see how it is tomorrow when I go for a medium distance ride for me.

Nice ride today, bike was back to normal.
It was definitely the oil/glue they used.
