With all due respec' to those on the waggon, I wish yer average middle-class middle-aged person would at least let their hair down a bit when at a party....been to a few recently (work and friends of friends) and everyone is so blimmin' careful... one glass of wine, or perhaps a beer ... do you have any fruit tea? oh, just a glass of water for me please... mince pie? oh no, I've had three this week already...really? this is my third in the last 10 minutes.... have a laugh for gawd's sake!;):tongue:

edit...not talking about situations where people have to drive or anything like that, just find it frustrating occasionally when people trhow a party (ie an opportunity to get together for no particular reason, indulge in food and summat to drink (without getting wasted), because that's what people like to do...or so I thought, but I often find they prefer to stand around making awkward conversation, not indulging in anything, and leave the place knowing just as little about each other as they did when they turned up in the first place...) I don't get it. I like to have a laugh, have a drink, let my hair down and enjoy the process...

I spurn any such occasions at my place of daily imprisonment. It's bad enough being involuntarily cooped up with most of my "colleagues" without spending my own precious time in their company.

Fair enough Nick, and I like to forget about work once i leave the place, but i still like to think I can socialise, maybe get to know somehting more about those i work with...it can only help the world go round, surely...but last week's work one was marred by people not speaking to each other, or speaking about each other in loud voices, or not turning up cos someone else might be there, who slighted them 18 months ago, cr@p like that...tw@ts. Then I went to one not connected with work, and everyone was so dry, I wondered why they bothered to turn up in the first place....grr....

The difference between a work do and one with your friends is that you have to be a little bit cautious at work events. I do not get drunk at work events and therefore for me, the letting the hair down is best done with people you can trust or have less professional leverage.

Nope; the only parties I go to are ones where I trust the host not to invite any gits.

He's also scoffing deepfried mars bars and pizzas, and washing it all down with pints of Bucky. ;)

Glad to hear this stereotype of yours is no longer reserved for just Scots! Now it's the Oirish too is it?!

Well Fnaar, I have my works night out on Friday. First Christmas night out I've been to at my present employers. I have a slight worry that I will be much more drunk than anyone else but frankly I have to make the most of what nights out I do have. The reason I've not been to one with this lot before is simply due to the same fear. I don't think I've ever managed "A" drink. In a way, I'm irritated enough by my current work situation to not really care much about causing offence to the pole-arsed brigade.

Anyway, I agree, if you're having a party, then have a god-damn party!

Where was yours fnaar? in the office or at a different venue?
It was a pub then a meal...got another one later this eek, but thinking of not going...
I've certainly 'overdone' things in the past, and learned my lesson (as well as successfully cutting down enormously on my booze intake, and can now happily have a drink and not get bladdered), but I just don't understand why people might go to a 'party' and not ...er... party... ;)

Dunno - will the people on my Ignore List be there?

Yes, but you won't be able to see them, thanks to clever invisibility cloaks...

It's our department party on Thursday, the one with the 1940's theme, and there will also be 'christmas cocktails' apparently (although it's a bar, so no free booze). The last one was as pirate theme, and the cocktails were rather nice, so I may indulge again. Mind you, wartime cocktails, they ought by rights to be made out of potatoes and melted down saucepans.

I must practise my Land Girl headscarf tying before then...
