Windows have stopped supporting XP but my laptop is still installing and downloading 'updates'. Is something dodgy going on?

If it has been a while since you ran Windows Update, then your machine could simply be downloading and installing updates that were release by MS prior to 8th April.

They did release a couple of new updates after the announced 'end of support date' had passed. Can't remember the explanation they gave, but there was one.

Companies pay for updates to be applied, these fixes are then released publicly. IIRC there was an NT4 update released recently

Microsoft update also includes Office and other MS products, so you may be getting updates for these rather than the OS.

I reinstalled Windows XP last week and shortly thereafter was offered 72 updates by Microsoft. At least, it claimed to be Microsoft but I haven't had the courage to take the plunge yet.

All existing updates are still available. You'll have more than 72 once that round is installed I would have thought.

Microsoft did release a few updates due to some 'additional' security flaws that were found in all Windows (caused by internet explorer), so released the XP one as well.
