Whilst cycling last night, there was a big crack in the road, which caused me to come off my bike, and my bike lights shot right off (they had good brackets too despite being cheap, have stayed on where Cateye and others have failed), and are now lost (went somewhere down an embankment). I wasn't going fast, but still came off the bike.

Hit my head, cut my eyelid (got a slit in it now), nose and knee, but could have been worse if I hadn't been wearing the helmet! My head is not cut, but been feeling a bit disorientated and confused (even bought one of my cousin's Christmas present twice despite just buying the first one 10 minutes before the second!), so am not going to cycle for a few days or so.
Whilst it was just a cheapo helmet, I'm suprised it stayed almost intact! But I need to get another one now anyway as they say you should replace them after an accident.

I'm going to the doctors anyway over an infected gerbil bite in my finger that has failed to heal despite antiseptic cream, so I will mention the injuries to him. I did try cycling earlier as the disorientation had gone, but it came back on the way home (and has been in spates), so walked much of the way and left my bike at my sisters. How long should I leave before I get back on the bike?

With the disorientation and confusion, I wonder how much worse it would have been had I not been wearing my helemet? Just glad I was!

 Who knows?

"I tried, and failed, to stop smoking because the doctor said it would stunt my growth. Wish I had listened to him."

"But your six foot four!"

"Yeah - but I could have been seven foot two."

This does highlight the sense of the British Dental Association's suggestion that full face helmets should be worn.

The dental profession could: play an active role in promoting cycle helmet use; support calls for the compulsory wearing of cycling helmets, particularly for children; press for modification of helmet design and standards to increase protection of the face.

As dentists, we are particularly interested in the face. With cur-
rent helmets there is a weaker, though noticeable, reduction in the
risk of middle third facial injuries. We should therefore be lobbying
for improvements in design as well as increased use.

A full face helmet in this case would (potentially) have prevented the nose and forehead injuries as well.

And would have kept me warmer too! It was freezing! Though I do have hyperhidrosis, so wouldn't have been sweating like mad if I had a full face helmet! But couldn't a full face helmet also be dangerous with the visor?

lol the bite looks a lot worse than you'd expect from a gerbil bite and it's showing no sign of healing despite happening on the 8th December and using antiseptic cream. It's also a little hole. My Dad had a hole in his leg from a tap dancing on stage accident which never healed. As one of my two gerbils died in September, I was introducing another (which is actually their Mum who my sister had previously), and they seemed to be showing good progress with the "split-cage", so I put them together.

All was going ok, until Storm (the Mum and "new" gerbil) kept trying to do the dominance thing (there is nearly always a dominant gerbil in a pair, ie the boss but there wasn't any dominance with the one that died and the cagemate left), but Sandy is not used to dominance having got on really well with her deceased cagemate/sister, so after a while, she got fed up and started fighting. I quickly seperated them, but the bite was meant for Storm, not me! On the plus side, the gerbils didn't get hurt!

dav1d, I'm glad you are OK. Get down to the GP sharpish, IMVVHO.

By the way, mild concussion and gerbil bites are as nothing compared to the injuries you will receive for daring to offer an opinion on h#lm#ts hereabouts. Dig a slit trench now!

Thanks. Well I'll be going tomorrow if I can get an appointment (usually always got appointments at short notice at my doctors!). Lol I know a lot of people don't like helmets, and I didn't wear one for years. But glad I did last night! I don't care if people don't wear helmets, that's up to them. But I will continue wearing helmets.

Well, now you need a new one, so there's an upside, the pleasure of choosing.

Glad you're not too hurt David or hopefully you're not, I won't comment on headwear but will echo the sentiments of going to the docs about it.

Has anyone asked how the bike is?

I hate full face helmets on the road - kids often like them and have really cheap ones - they can't see as well, hear as well and the one I think most important - you loose some of that communication with other road users who can't see you face as clearly.

Look if you are suffering any strange symptoms after coming off your bike (helmet or no helmet) then you need to see a doc today. Hope that you are now starting to feel better but get it checked out TODAY.
