Woodrup Cycles in Leeds have built three sets of wheels for me and they too have been very reliable and competitively priced.
My experience may not be typical, but the pair of wheels Woodrup built for me last year were not reliable. The front went out true after 50 miles and I had two rear spokes and one front snap in the 150 miles after that; and to add insult to injury, one went in with a newish Conti tyre on it and came out with none. In fairness to Woodrups, they put it all right for nothing (including a new tyre), but I had to borrow a set of wheels for a week in Spain because I couldn't trust theirs. So even a good bike shop can have a problem if they take on an inexperienced wheelbuilder.

MV, Paul Hewitt is fairly close to you and has a good reputation.

I have Spa Cycles (2 sets, oldest abt 11) and Harry Rowland (1 set now 10 years old) wheels. Both apparently bomb proof.

I would offer to do them for you, but I don't have a truing jig at the moment.

my wheels have been on my road bike for the past 5-6 years and not had to true them yet!

wheel building isn't that hard, just a matter of patience and following instruction.

You have Hewitt near you. I will also recommend Wills Wheels in Stockport or Rick Green in Handforth, neither mail order but sure if you phone up they would build and send.

aye, i've always intended building my own as the price of a rim and a hub isn't much... it was only when i factored in the 72 spokes i realised the actual build (from Spa) was costing a mere 20-30 quid; 10-15 per wheel, which at a first attempt to build my own would probably take me all weekend.

My nomination Gary Proud at Kendell Cycles in Castleford built me a couple of pairs for cyclo-cross about 18 years ago, & whilst I had them and that bike they survived several winters of cross-racing without trueing

I still see the purchaser of that bike every so often, & he told me that up to him writing the bike off (in a RTC) that the wheels were still trues, if a bit worn from the mud/grit of crosses

Gary also rebuilt the wheels wheels on my Dyna-Tech not very long after its purchase (& I bought it new in '94), & the same wheels are still in use, but now the Dyna-Tech is my commuter/winter-bike
