York MP criticised for claiming mileage...

I agree with his stance but I also think that MPs shouldn't be claiming back the cost of commuting to work, unless they have to travel from their constituency into Greater London.

The cost of travelling during work though is another matter. That said, my mother never got any help with this in the 80s as a care worker. She would have to travel miles between the addresses of each client, even though she was on what would now be classed as an illegal wage. Worse still she was only guaranteed 19 hours a week. I'd rather people like that were able to claim these sorts of expenses, rather than people on three figure salaries*.

It's a really sloppy piece of reporting by the York Press. You can't tell whether he is claiming under the HMRC scheme (which we are all entitled to do) or under the Parliamentary scheme. Nor can you tell whether he has claimed for cycling at work, which is allowed, or to work, which isn't. I suspect that the YP's journalist has lifted it from one of the national rags and not bothered to do any work beyond re-wording it.

Personally I'm more offended by the YP inviting readers to shovel money into their coffers by ringing a premium voting number on their website.

If he's using it for his work in the constituency he's absolutely entitled to the 20p per mile.

The YP and any other paper or anyone else need to be severely criticised for commenting adversely on his using the lowest cost option to go about his business, saving government money and carbon emissions by doing so.

The York Press is a pretty low-grade production and attracts the usual idiots in the comments section.

Hugh Bayley claimed £4.80 last year for cycling around his York Central constituency, and said the payment would be used for bike maintenance.

He's not going to get much maintenance done for £4.80.

The York Press has always been anti-cyclist. I'd have to look at Hugh Bayley's other transport expenses before passing judgement.
