When I was young (yes I'm feeling old), when someone came in to the shop I worked in, I called them 'Sir'.

Not 'bud', 'mate' or 'pal'.

I'm not your friend mr shop assistant, I'm the reason you have a job!

I was in coop the other day, buying a few bits and bobs and the kid that was on the till called me 'mate' 11 times!!

Ok so they aren't your friend, i dare say those that you called Sir didn't have knighthoods either, they are just being friendly, would you rather that or some miserable git that just grunts and groans. Cant please some people.

its just manners. You dont get over familiar with people you dont know, particularly when you are in customer service situation.

'Bud, mate' or 'pal' isn't getting over familiar with someone, it's just words that people use nowadays. I don't think I've ever heard someone being called 'Sir' in my life.

It's a term worth keeping up your sleeve for certain occasions when you suspect you may be in for a verbal scolding. Addressing the other guy as sir usually shocks him a little causing him to reconsider his poor opinion of you.

Well that's my view anyway, probably a load of rubbish.^_^

I call people Sir if they're much older than me or look as though they might complain. Nearly everyone else Fella.
People who are rude to me get called much much worse.
It's what to call women (I'm a woman so I can hardly call them 'love') that troubles me!

The other day I went to an arson where an 18 yr old lad (whose drug running associates were suspected of starting said fire!) was calling his *mum* Mate! I couldn't believe it! I kept saying "Did you just call your mum Mate? How rude!"
I'd have got a good telling off for that!

I'm a community service officer and most of them call me by name ( Jim ) but you can always tell the ones who have been in prison before , they all call anyone in authority boss!!
