I wasn't even pedallling it

I gave an underused hybrid to a mechanic at the local garage the other day and I called in to se how he was getting on with it.

"It's too fast!" he complained much to the amusement of his fellow workers. I pointed out that its speed was entirely dependent upon the pedaller and that he didn't have to pedal fast.

Quizzing him further it turns out that he considers the bike to be 'frisky' i.e. responsive. It's a whole lot lighter than the full suspension BSO that's been scrapped. The wheels are 700c x 28mm and as a result for a given energy input the speed is higher.

He is very pleased with it otherwise.

He'll get used to it.

All the mechanics I know don't do 'fast'.

Yes, I was the same after I changed my non descript tires that came with the bike to schwalbe city jets, like it now!

I remember when my Dad bought a 3 litre Mk1 Capri and and said it was too fast. He then replaced it with a Renault 5 GT Turbo and said the same thing.
At least he drove the Capri regularly, the Renault kept getting broken into and being returned to the garage for repairs!
^_^

I found that a decent recumbent trike was 'too fast', until I got used to it and then had to give it back. I just put the same effort into pedaling as I did on the Ratrike and it took off like a rocket!

The only reason that he thinks it's too fast is because of mechanical suction.

You know, when mechanics go on a training course to teach them to suck in air and shake their heads when looking at anything vaguely mechanically faulty whilst they mentally work out how much they can shaft you for?

Well that suction is pretty powerful, and if added to pedalling fast? Well, anything could happen...

You should have left a ton of pies in the saddlebag.
