Aren't those the important bits for shifting however? The Defy is a good bike (I have one) but check the spec - the only Ultegra parts are the shifters and rear derailleur!

You will have to explain how a picture of ali aka muhammed ali , cassius clay , a pun on your not sure what ali is in regards to a bike is not pc unless i have turned into a raging nutter ( which is possible ) and not noticed.Perhaps not entirely PC

I'd love to know what the Ali is riding in this pic. If it's good enough for 'The greatest' then it's good enough for me. He would have said al-loo-min-um...
Thanks for your input, I'm in Norwich and as such don't know of a shop in the area that does Ribble,Dolan etc.. I would definitely want to test ride any bike before I buy as a newbie Im still not sure of what frame size etc... So will take advice and end up buying the bike that is comfortable and makes me smile. If you want as light a bike as possible as you have the all weather option covered, a carbon bike makes sense.
Whereabouts are you in the country, as Ribble, Dolan etc as well as LBS like Paul's or Rutland cycles can have some v good end of line deals
E.g. giant Defy with Ultegra for £750 https://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m7b0s6p6992/GIANT-DEFY-0-2016
Or Cube carbon with Ultegra for a grand
https://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m7b0s6p6694/CUBE-ATTAIN-GTC-RACE-2016
That said, if local and the right size, this is gorgeous and a bargain, the frame alone sells for around £600
