National Cycle Route 1 must take cyclists through the seedy bits - come to think of it most National Cycle Routes take you through the less salubrious bits of towns and cities.
Yes, it seems like it's only the dedication of my predecessors in the local cycling campaign that has prevented NCR1 being rerouted between HGV loading bays and drainage channels in King's Lynn. We seem to have a county council which doesn't care about their proclaimed sustainable tourism policy and Sustrans who basically live too far away to recognise the pretty bits of town. NCR1 in Norwich goes through two areas that were building sites for many years, linked by cobbled streets and hopping between a busy stretches of road and slippery paved cycle track

Thank you, as we normally stay further west in the Dales I appreciate any recommendations as we're unfamilair with the area.

If you like steam trains, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is worth a ride. Whitby to Pickering. Grosmont has a large railway depot and you can get close to the locomotives.

On the pie front, Bothams of Whitby and Jacksons in Ruswarp are worth a visit.

An overlooked museum is the Museum of Victorian Science at Glaisdale - you will need to ring and make an appointment but it's well worth a visit.

My FatherInLaw is already filling me in on the trains - he has been a massive chuffer for 50 years!
The museum looks brilliant, thank you very much.

Scarborough has definitely seen better days, if you look closely, but it is trying to improve, despite the run downness in some areas it is one of my favourite places, we often park on the South Cliff area, outside The Royal Hospital, from the TV series. (not really a hospital) and walk along the seafront to Scalby Mills, then along the top on the way back, the old theatre on the prom needs demolishing and some of the amusements are a bit garish, don't forget to visit the Harbour Bar for a coffee or ice cream, it hasn't changed since the 60s it was the 1st stop on a morning after spending a cold sleepless night in a sleeping bag by the sea.

Whitby is full of character and the best fish and chips you can buy, the Magpie by the Harbour is very popular but expensive compared to some of the others,

well, I have a few days of work so deciding what to do.

initially was going to jump on the bike a go away for a few days, but now i've decided to jump in the car and go where the windy roads lead me.

I live in the northwest so I think I will head towards the east coast, which is straight across the country and take it from there.

looking, Whitby and Scarbourgh seem the place to visit. Did visit these places when was a child only and so, this looks like the destination for me.
Accommodation is looking like hostels, would like to tent but cannot be bothered. I don't always go away so why treat myself to a hostel and socialise.

Its more straightforward if you are a single person like myself to just up and go, no need to ask for permission, up to a point this is fine, though a female companion would be preferred, not just on this trip but in general. alone.

well, that's my plan, scampi and chips and the seafront, map, walking boots, waterproofs, books to read, lack of money. That's about it really.

If you get to Whitby the Magple Cafe do posh fish and chips .Expensfve but delicious.

well, I've returned from the said trip.
Thanks for responses.
An enjoyable, worthy, scenic, learnt few days.
The drive through Ingleton, Hawes, Bolton Castle, Bedale and other similar villages, long standing with it charisma way before I became an earthling were worthy for a respectful visit on the journey there.
Visited Whitby, Robin hoods bay, Scarborough. Delighted with Whitby itself and RH bay as so splendid, dated ginnels and fantastic views and beach walk.
Scarborough, was OK, a step up from Blackpool, just.
Evening, chilled in a bar in Whitby, the spa complex in Scarborough, this was great as coastival was on, music, art, history, puppet show, very good! all free, that was a good night spent, even got in free to see Asian dub foundation. Chippy in Whitby I went to was opposite the Tourist office, get loads of chips!
The YHA refused me entry due to no PHOTO ID, not a chance. Sod'em, I stayed relaxed, purchased a king size duvet for 4.99 and slept in my estate boot for both nights. Not that cold but sleepless...
It was a last minute breakaway and soo glad I did, was a quiet, reflective, diverse retreat, great places visited, so impressed by the area. I did not have time to walk on the moors, or motivated as lack of sleep but spent time stopping at villages, but would like to do the moors. Stopped at Sutton banks on return, would go there for mountain cycling as seemed popular...
I would go again, especially when the tour of Yorkshire is on in a few months, perhaps with a female company to share the moment...

It's more straightforward if you are a married person like myself just to up and go with your partner's encouragement. This is totally fine and a lack of companionship is preferred not just on any trip but on most trips in general. It's very nice being on your own - being able to do things without arguments, compromise and awkward silences. :okay:

yes, i agree to a point, but memories is better of shared.
You will miss what you have once its gone.

And you'll work off quite a few of the calories walking back up the hill again.
Has anyone cycled that?
I didn't even cycle down, considered the brake pad wear and decided to walk down and up. Although did wonder about leaving the bike with full touring load unattended at the top, but all was well:smile:.

Cycling down

For some reason that aspect didn't occur to me. Not sure even my death grip on the brakes would be enough, and wouldn't fancy a dip in the sea if the tide was in!
