It's a bit more complicated than that...
I was away with the Tandem Club to watch Le Tour when it visited Yorkshire. One of my Tandem friends is plain speaking (she's from Lincolnshire after all):
"If I had a pound for every time someone said 'she's not pedalling at the back', I wouldn't have to fooking pedal."
We got up to about 20 during the course of Ride London 2015 before (a) getting bored of counting and (b) dropping off the back of the main group of riders.

I like the Eddy Mercx one:

"Don't buy upgrades. Ride up grades."
It's a good saying, but I kind of doubt that Merckx said it, because, after all, he was in the business of selling upgrades after he retired. And he never spent much time in the USA, to pick up the term "grade" for a hill.

Reminds me of "You're very quiet back there" when soloing a tandem or riding with an unoccupied child or passenger seat behind. :smile:

That really happened to mate of mine. Turned out his wife had been left behind a mile back after getting off to open a gate.
