The sad thing is that he gave up smoking 10 years ago and now he started on e-fags because of stress and he is never off the bloody thing! His wife also started on it after 10 years! Really can't understand it to be honest. I have 2 brothers who used to smoke, until one day they decided to.stop. they finished their last packet and never touched one since. That was 20 years ago. I think it is all about will power and clearly some people don't seem to have any.

It's not quite that simple. The drug addiction is only a tiny part of it. The real problem is with the thought process and so long as someone genuinely believes cigarettes add some enjoyment or benefit to their life, it will be incredibly difficult to stop doing it. Much the same as with emotional eating or drinking, we all know we shouldn't do these things but many still do as they've come to see it as a crutch and a coping mechanism and even if they do stop for a period of time, once something stressful crops up, it's all too easy to fall of the wagon as the temptation is ever present. And then society labels them as failures which is a good way to make someone feel good about themselves.

Very few people genuinely like change and it is an incredibly difficult thing to do to seriously examine yourself, be honest about your problems and try and modify your thought processes.

I gave up after reading Allen Carrs book. I was sat in a hospital waiting to interview a specialist about COPD. There was a big poster showing how smoking basically f***s up EVERY part of the body from brain to feet, that was enough for me. I did fall off the wagon about 5 years later for 6 months, and have kicked myself for being so bloody stupid since

The essential message that I took away from the book is that you don't need cigarettes as a crutch or to cope with stress as non smokers manage without :okay:

Pretty bloody stupid to ever start given that when I was 17 my mum had surgery and treatment for lung cancer and brain secondaries...she is still alive 25 years on :hugs: but living with the scar and consequences of the treatment  She knows how incredibly lucky she was given the survival statistics for lung cancer even now
