I think there is AI in the pig world though - I seem to remember mention of it in the Rare Breeds Trust magazine. Maybe it's just for breeds with not enough boars to get about.

It started off with a conversation along the lines of 'Oh look there's a big bull in that field with the cows' and progressed from there really.

Shortly after I started my PhD on the biometry (body measurements) of Medieval livestock, I was cycling in Northumbria, and noticed a ram in a field. "Gosh," I though, "He's got massively robust metacarpals".

It was only after that, I noticed what else he had that was massive....
