A little scary that 1960s might be "historical" in this context

The War Memorial in Raeren, eastern Belgium. The only allied war memorial I have
seen with the inscriptions entirely in German.

Alfred Russel Wallace who had worked out independently of Darwin the mechanics of Evolution.

He's buried in Broadstone Cemetery just up the road. I always stop and say hello as it's on the path to my mother and father in law's grave.

So why is it in German, not phlegmish.
Remember this one for your pub quizzes. Belgium has three official languages: French, Flemish (=±Nederlands) and German. The German territories are in the far east of the country around the towns of Eupen and St Vith. As geography would have it, the German-speaking area is completely contained within the French-speaking area except for where it actually abuts the German border. Under the Belgian constitution it forms one of the three federal communities but is a part of the French-speaking Province of Liège. Fascinating facts from near and far!
