Well said (or well written!)

I also like Prince's "nothing compares to you". Even though he wrote it and did the original, I think most people regard Sinead's version as the first.

All along the watchtower by Jimi Hendrix must be one of the best covers ever.

Another great Dylan cover is
Like a rolling stone by the Rolling Stones from their Stripped album

Both "The Animals" and "Santa Esmeralda" have both done brilliant versions
of Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood".

"The Nice" doing Bernstein's "America". Hell, it's even got excerpts from Dvořák's "New World Symphony" thrown in.
