Insurance, illegality and horses...

A horsey friend of mine told me that the proud boast of his nag's insurer was that they have never paid out as they can always prove it's not the horse,/rider's fault.

I can't help seeing a certain irony in "cyclists" seeming to support compulsion (or at any rate obligation) for owners of normal farmyard animals to have insurance. Horses have been domesticated for a lot longer than bikes you know.

For the avoidance of doubt, I have never owned a horse and only ridden horses about 4 times in the last 40 odd years

I think (I am not a lawyer) that the quotes above suggest that the law is strict liability, so fault is irrelevant. It's certainly not the case that the equine portfolio I know never pays out.
