thanks arch. much appreciated.

i took a closer look and the rear hanger does not seem out of line. it looks like the cage that houses the two small cogs on the mech may be twisted.

when i look down the inside of the rear mech hanger, as its attached to the frame, it seems parallel to the smallest cog in the cassette.

the jockey wheels can be removed for cleaning.sounds like the gears need to be indexed plenty of video,s on you tube if the cage is bent i doubt you will be able to get it back to its original position but may be worth a try

Either buy the tool you posted earlier and use that or take the bike to a shop and ask them to check alignment and correct or if gone too far replace it.

I agree the alignment looks iffy. Very hard to tell from photos if it's one, some or all of: the hanger, mech or (shudder) the frame. As mentioned above, with the alignment tool you or an LBS could try to align it as is, which may not work if the derailleur is too bent or the hanger is already too weak and snaps. Aligning hangers needs a delicate touch.

I was just thinking about the stiffness back pedalling you mentioned. It would be good to eliminate other causes, such as stiff wheel freewheel, chain or chainset.

thanks excellent idea the bike is dirty, i was waiting til id fixed it, but its obvious and i neglected it.

thanks raleighnut. did you mean the halfords hanger?

the bike shop idea is sound advice and i will get there i just want to learn or get enmeshed in the problems so i can solve it myself in future. this is the first rear mech ive attempted to sort seriously. im not frustrated or anything )) ive just been for a ride on another bike.

much appreciate all the input. id be pretty much stuck otherwise.

right, ive took off the derailiuer and took some more photos, which give a clearer view. i gently bent the derailiuer once and then looked at it for a bit and began setting up the gears, and then again bent it gently, setting up the gears a second time i noticed there was maybe a millimetre play at the frame where the mech attaches to the hanger and frame. the bolt couldnt be tightened further, so considered a washer or something hadnt been placed correctly. got sidetracked at this point and took the derailiuer off as i was ascertaining the connections function, heres the new photos,

if it cant be seen, the hanger does seem bent to me, id describe it as seeming straight until its lowest point relative to the frame, the hanger curls in slightly. if so, what would be the best tool too pull it back out? thanks.

update: just looked again and i think its definitely bent.

Derailleur hanger alignment tool, it screws into the hanger where the derailleur goes and has a big arm that measures it's position relative to the backwheel (incidentally dropout and frame alignment can come into play here.) The tool's arm can then be used to gently bend the hanger back into alignment. However the hanger is purposely a sacrificial part designed to break before the derailleur or frame, and being aluminium can only take limited bending before snapping, in which case a replacement is needed.
To check the hanger is definitely bent remove from the frame and place it on a flat surface and see if it rocks either way up, or if a handy straight edge is available you may be able to test it that way on the frame.
