02891 287005 scam warning.

I missed a call from this number on a rarely used personal mobile of mine yesterday. I didn't recognise this code or number as one relevant to anything pertaining to me so I checked it out on this new interweb thingy. Apparently many people have recieved calls from this number and if answered, a man with a broad Northern Irish (the code is a NI one) accent claiming to be from Nat West is asking all sorts of personal details and claiming to be from Nat West Insurance services. Nat West have been notified and reckon it is someone phishing.

I do. I press the answer button, rest the phone on the table and say nothing. I had about thirty calls from that number. They've stopped now.

This is a good technique for many nuisance calls, certainly on land-lines it prevents them from using their phone until you hang-up.

He must be a few basalt rocks short of a full causeway if he doesn't use number with held . I read 028... and straightaway thought NI Belfast.
When they call click on your alternative recorded message saying the number you have called is currently unavailable and the caller is being re-directed to 0905... (premium the sky is the limit rate) or 0870 (National 9p a minute)

The guy just called me again and this time I answered. Even when I told him I was looking at a thread on the number on my screen that indicated it was a phishing scam, he persisted in claiming to be from Nat West! I told him he'd got top marks from me for trying but not to bother me again.

Similar kind of call from "my" bank. Lloyds, not Lloyds TSB. Number left on the system 0000290075032. Minor problem, I've not been with the TSB since 2001.

Is there something about this time of year that brings them out.
