It was exactly 8 miles out of a 12 mile commute before a second car overtook me today on my commute in (mind you, I did leave at 5:30am, so I know I'm up before quite a few people). I don't think I've had fewer cars than that pass me for that distance before -I'm very fortunate on my commute route.

I also wish I could say that this was due to my lightning fast speed, but alas, it's not  -just that not many cars were going my way at that time in the morning.

It was lovely though; a little piece of calm and tranquility on New England roads (excluding my horrible gasping sounds of breathing).

Can anyone beat this record? What's the longest you've commuted on a road without having a car go by you?

This isn't quite the same thing but in January I went out cycling for 15 minutes before I had to use my brakes - and discovered they were iced up and non-functional.

Considering I'm in the overcrowded south, Hampshire has a rich network of back-lanes that see very little traffic. My 'no car' record achieved during my commute at approx 3:00pm on a weekday is about 15 miles between Basingstoke and Alresford via NCN 23. It's happened on more than one occasion as well.

I always have to use the bloody breaks ,especially when I've got some momentum going .It'd be better if I was the only one on the road  . Could get a bit boring though.

Peter's 'Tour of Hampshire' back in April took in some of my commute route. I think a few of the 'Londons' harboured a certain resentment, especially after I mentioned it for the 20th time.;);)

Grumble..

Although it was a lovely ride, and a pleasure not seeing many cars, I do enjoy fighting with cars for space, and then cruising past lines of stationary traffic with a smile on my face.

Peaceful, isn't it? My morning commute at 6:00 a.m. isn't too bad, but I REALLY enjoy cycling at night! It's so relaxing to not have the roar of traffic! Cars make an incredible amount of noise!
