[QUOTE="nickyboy, post: 4003624, member: 27775"Given you spend time in the destination, I'd rather finish at the seaside. Also the transport options are better starting Mcr and finishing Llandudno. Gonna be a gentle easterly next time anyway

Do we get sunshine as well[/QUOTE]

I remember singing "I can see clearly now the rain has gone...." cycling down Rhyl promenade. Sure we're getting sun this time........you trust me don't you?

You might like to look at an event run by the Chester and North Wales CTC group.

In July each year they run The Bert Bailey Memorial Veterans' 100 starting from the village hall in Duddon, which is about 15 miles east of Chester

You have be 50+ to take part. The event is very well organised. The entrants are split in to groups of around a dozen, each with a group leader from the club (who knows the route)

The groups are set off at ten minute intervals. After 25 miles there's a tea stop, with lunch supplied at the half way mark. As the route goes roughly south along the Dee valley the route is quite flat, I don't think I used my 34 inner ring last year !!

I don't know the date for the 2016 ride but for an entry fee of less than £20 it's one of best days out I've had on bike, 100 miles will never feel so easy !!!

doesn't have to be, mind you it is rather boring, but there is NCN 5 along the coast which is flat other than 1 short rise which can be diverted around.
Getting back again via another route is another matter. My OH did a 158 miler (was meant to be 200 miles but he baled) back in the summer from Northwich to Snowdon and back again and the only real climb he had was up Pen y Pass

My first 100 miler only had about 3,000 foot of climbing in it. https://www.strava.com/activities/164502812 that was north wales and Cheshire area. It wasn't designed to be flat and I had no idea what the route was because a friend planned it and road with me, but it is relatively flat, though some of the roads were busier than I would have normally ridden on.
Thanks for that.............looks very interesting.........as does one of the links from it.

As I don't have a GPS I can't show you a file of the route, however I do have a map!
From Duddon the route goes south in an elongated 8 shape. It goes through the lanes to Overton (elevensies), and then continues south to lunch at Llandrinio, west of Shrewsbury. Returning north via different roads to Overton for afternoon tea and back to Duddon to complete the ride.
Sorry if this is a bit vague but hopefully it will give you some idea of the route. It's all on OS maps 126 & 117.

Have a think about driving to your destination the day before, getting the train back and doing the ride the next day.

I did that for a long ride to York.

The need to retrieve the car was extra encouragement to complete the ride, and having the car there on arrival removed all bikes on train anxiety.

I'm putting this tip in the memory banks!!! So simple but never considered it before!

So much easier getting the train with no bike

unless it's me ??
