We are going to see our daughter at the Holkham tri event this weekend and will be staying a few days near Fakenham. I’m going to take my bike and hopefully cycle the coast road or in and around Wells/Cley. Many years ago we were regularly visitors to the area but I’ve never taken a bicycle.

Which roads need to be avoided and should I go with the gravel or road wheels?

Thanks

I would stay off the Coast Road as it’s quite busy, especially around Hunstanton. There’s a lovely network of lanes inland that are virtually traffic free. We have often stayed at Heacham and Sandringham in our Campervan and done rides from there . Done rides all over. Bircham Windmill has a nice cafe. Burnham Market is easily reached via country lanes and has a few cafes and pubs. Creake Abbey ruins have a small retail park next door that’s got a nice cafe. Castle Acre is another favoured destination of ours, as is Wells next the Sea.

We have the Goldeneye Cycling Map of Norfolk that shows designated cycle routes, but any rides away from the main A roads are fine for cycling. I usually ride my road or touring bike (Dawes Super Galaxy). There are some gravel/off road routes you can do.

Good advice above - Cross the main routes (can be A or B roads) rather than ride along them. There are plenty of 'white roads' a little inland from the coast.

I’ve downloaded the ..gpx of the Rebellion Way and will pick off the section at the top. I will be looking for good coffee stops between Hunstanton and Cley maybe Holt.

Thanks for the pointers.

Here’s a route from the North Norfolk wheelers website, passing close to Fakenham. Plenty of other routes on their website.

As all the above posts say avoid the coast road if possible also it can be deceptively hilly and the back roads can be a little bit rough and flinty.

Don't suppose your daughter was on a train from Norwich to Thetford yesterday? There was a young couple with Canyon bikes who said they were meeting parents to take them to a Triathlon in Holkham.

No, they drove today, as did we.
