Incredible exploit by two French guys to honour 100 years of TdeF in the Pyrénées. After reading the book, L’étape assassine, Luchon-Bayonne 1910, the journalist Jean-Paul Rey wanted to ride exactly the same stage on old TdeF bikes so teamed up with Marc Lebreton, who collects and restores old bikes and managed to supply two authentic machines. They both started from Luchin at 3.30 in the morning of 12 june, the same starting time and place as the famous stage, and finished the ride of 326ks in Bayonne at 3.15 the next morning, so just short of 24 hours of riding, after climbing the Tourmelet and the col du Soulor where Jean Bobet and André Darrigade were on hand to give them encouragement. The gearing was 44 up front and 24/20 at the back by turning the wheel round. Chapeau lads!
