I'm 6'8 and 19 stone so I ride a triple with a 28 on the rear. But downhill I often hit 50mph or close. With a 12 i only ever got to 46.7 but have topped out at 51.3 with the 11 as the 12 often left me spinning to nothing.
Not every cyclist is 5'10 and 12stone
if you get to the point where you are spinning out on 50/12, then you are better off just tucking in and freewheeling.
The OP asked if anyone knew of an 11-30 ten speed cassette and gets a load of advice on how he doesn't need one![]()

It's not always about maximum speed. I like an 11 because at about 16-17 mph, that suits my cadence for a nicer steady pace. On a 12, I find I'm spinning a bit more than I like long term on the flat.
