Tell him to learn to peddle faster. Sounds a bit internet speedy to me, I would suggest if they need a 30 then they will not have enough power to do an 11 justice.

Quite the opposite is true if the rider is quite heavy but powerful, he will need a wider range of gears .

Not quite true.

I'm 6'8 and 19 stone so I ride a triple with a 28 on the rear. But downhill I often hit 50mph or close. With a 12 i only ever got to 46.7 but have topped out at 51.3 with the 11 as the 12 often left me spinning to nothing.

Not every cyclist is 5'10 and 12stone

Now would you like to tell me what revved out is for you, I will tell you the difference roughly is about 10rpm at that speed or there about, as I said learn to pedal quicker. There is so many things that come into the equation on why you were going faster, I doubt it was only gear ratio.

Not here offten enough to argue
Just cause you need a triple for climbing - doesnt mean you can't do an 11 tooth lower gear justice - but this isn't the thread to argue it on

for what its worth i looked for an 11-30 and couldn't find one, but found plenty of 12-30's in tiagra and ultegra

I'm happy with my 12-28 on my winter bike, I've never been in a situation where I wished I had an 11t on the cassette.

I have the 10-speed 11-32 cassette on my weekend bike and like it - SRAM PG 1070.
I think they do 11-28 / 11-32 close to what you want, but not 11-30.
Being heavy it allows me to spin up hills better and also motor down the other side whilst keeping pedalling - good endurance training! The only downside is that the gap between gears is bigger than usual and sometimes you will feel in between the optimum gear - pros and cons.
(You can still train low/high cadence pedalling technique on this cassette on certain days - if that's what you want - by not using the extreme gears, but at least you have the option.)
Example one here, but I'd search around for a better price (mine was around £50, so not inexpensive)...

Best of luck

It's not always about maximum speed. I like an 11 because at about 16-17 mph, that suits my cadence for a nicer steady pace. On a 12, I find I'm spinning a bit more than I like long term on the flat.
