First rain for about a month following three weeks of road gritting. I even had the sense to give it a squirt of lube when I got home yesterday (not that I spent long on it- it was raining). Didn't help much, you should see it. Often I'll see someone riding around on a cheap MTB with a really rusty'n'dry chain and it pains me.

My chain looks like that.

It's gotta go soon anyway, chain checker says so. Hopefully I'll have time for a good fettling session at the weekend.

Thanks for the reminder - I've now run my current chain for over 500 miles so I'm going to change it (I bought a KMC chain in a ProBikeKit sale last year) and see if this "swap over at 500 miles to avoid chainring / cassette wear" lark actually works !

My current chain was starting to look a bit rusty after I gave the bike a wash on Sunday and wandered off, forgetting to wipe the chain dry and lube it. By the time I remembered 3 hrs later, the rust was everywhere !

What the outside of a chain looks like doesn't really matter, it's the inside that matters.

Course it matters - shiney silver.... ;)

My chain was freshly wiped and re-lubed with a drop of wet lube last night..... got to work today (rainy ride).....it's a black mess - all the salty gunge from the road - I'll be wiping away with a vengance again tonight......;) - then re-lube again.

Might be imagining it, but think we could also do with a pothole day the amount of new ones that have cropped up since the cold snap.

What on earth are those perfectly circular potholes about 6 inches across, steep sided, and 2 inches deep all about? I've seen a few recently. Is this the cycling equivalent of crop circles?

It's not surprising. Water gets into cracks, the water freezes and expands the crack widens.... I'm guessing but I would expect that cold snaps woudl increase the amount of potholes. Councils should sort them out quicker of course!
