1990's cheap French sounding red wine?

Does anyone remember the cheap red wine, sounded French but don't think it was, from the 1990's
GF and I are racking our brains out and googling everything here.

The French had never heard of it. It was misleading advertising but no one commented on it at the time.

Same applies to Liebfraumilch, the most famous German wine no German has ever heard of.

One time when we were buying wine commercially one of the fine vinyards offered to re-lable his high quality wine as 'Liebfraumilch' when he found out it was intended for the UK market

After a shame-faced google (I never like piat d'or, but I thought it was french), google tells me it is French.

Honestly, I love threads like this. OP posts a misunderstanding, and someone who shares it responds - then the mystery is solved.

It's like Kumala, an alleged South African brand, but apparently unknown in it's home country. Or a personal favourite of mine, Pfeiffers that chose a different name - and I can't remember what it was, but Pfeiffers sounded too European - when they launched in Britain.

On holiday probably in the early 1980's in the South of France we were drinking cheap red bought in 5lt plastic containers. It was I think 20 francs for the 5lts and 4 francs back on the container. La Clape or something like that.

I think I was confusing Piat D'or with Carte D'or (not the ice cream, see below). But also from this clip, I wouldn't have thought it was French because French wines at vin ordinaire prices are not held up to much regard in Australia, plus this ad, which I remember, explicitly says "Yalumba", which is/was a well known brand in Australia.

But if I first met Piat D'or in London, then I would definitely have assumed it was French, and been correct.
