1990'S Specialized Hardrock Bike - Brake Upgrade - options?

Looking to upgrade my cantilever brakes on the above bike.

It has straight handlebars with Sram combined Gripshift brake/ gear levers.

Wondered if fitting Shimano BR-CX70 would be my best option to improve stopping power - or maybe there are better options - any advice would be appreciated..

Any advice really would be appreciated - the fitted brakes are really poor at the moment....
