Except you're not paying tax on a c2w purchase, the payments are taken pre tax which is the point

I understand that, but I don't see your point. I'm not talking about being taxed 3 times in the purchasing of the bike. Just pointing out that most of us are taxed 3 or 4 times on the money that we earn in life, taxed 3 or 4 times on the same lump of money, hence why we might not feel so bad about being in cahoots with a dealer who is happy to bend/break some rules in our favour when it comes to a tax-free scheme.

You can buy more than one bike; i.e. a road bike and an MTB, plus extras, etc. as long as it's to a maximum of £1000.

The bikes must be for you; i.e. no children's bikes. I've got an MTB on the C2W scheme and have previously had a Dutch-style bike.

The legalities may be argued but HMRC aren't bothered in checking imo and experience.

In the same tax / scheme year? I thought you could only have one set of payments running at the same time?

You can buy more than one bike if the total is within the voucher's limit - but it is legally supposed to be for your own use.

Can't be bothered to find the link but I read it on cyclescheme FAQs - they gave the example where you might have one bike semi-permanently locked at a station en route to work, you used that one to commute to the office and the other one to get from home to your "local" station, whereupon you'd lock the latter bike up for the day.

I can't imagine leaving bikes at stations like that, I don't think they would last very long, but the option is there.

Thanks for your help everyone, think I understand it all better now. As the scheme allows one voucher up to £1,000 and doesn't stipulate one bike only, and given that my wife and I will both be using our bikes to cycle to work, but that she is unable to sign up to the scheme herself, I see no moral reason why I shouldn't take advantage of this option.

Ah, that weird space between legality and morality is just where the HMRC lawyers live.

Assume you'll be looking for £500 recommendations for a Women's Specific bike then...seems only fair if she's getting tangled in the same web  Anything for £200 will be heavy and probably put her off cycling...I've been there, but rather than being put off I've upgraded many times since, usually more than once a year

Oh no, don't say that! I'm having enough trouble narrowing down my own search for £800+ bikes without having to re-calculate my figures and start all over again! I was planning on going for an 800/200 split and me make up the difference out of my own pocket if my needs end up tipping over £800.
Her commute is only a few miles round trip, and she's a fair weather cyclist...surely we can find something serviceable and lightweight to do the job for her through the Spring and summer?!

I agree with @vickster, you aren't going to find a nice bike for £200, if you really want do do both bikes within the scheme then why not go £600/£400 or else buy hers outside the scheme. I don't think I'll be bothering with the scheme next time I buy a bike, I may as well just shop around for a bargain instead.

I don't think I could bear to climb back down by £200+ now after getting excited about the type of velocipedes I have my eye on.

So it might have to be the seconds option, if £200 bikes really are that bad. But then this thread will have been pointless and I'll have been wasting everyone's time!
It's starting to look like her getting a different job might be the simplest option....

Nope, it'll be heavy and probably with poor components. Forget C2W as @summerdays says and hunt around for a reduced bike at £400 odd (alu/carbon fork, flatbar, something like a Specialized Vita or Trek 7.x)

Don't be a selfish bloke ;) Never forget she is the #1 person in the relationship

Christmas is coming after all :snowball:

How does she currently do her commute, and how much does it cost, then add in a bit more for her being fitter and more healthy and joining you to, and then brownie points for not getting her a naff bike whilst you treat yourself to a nice bike, plus the extra time/money spent on sorting out her bike which may have cheap components that will need replacing faster. Isn't she worth it? (Mr Summerdays knows which side his bread is buttered and I've been told to treat myself to a new bike some time:thumbsup:)
