I once saw Cancellara in Wout's position with 5 miles to go. He just decided to go for it anyway, Gold or nothing, didn't care if he towed the others with him.

Similar in a way situation a couple of years ago when Nibali and Roglic were marking each other instead of riding (Giro)
That does not take anything away from Alaphlippe.
He had the smarts (panache/guts/experience) to pull away in the perfect moment during a relay and took advantage of indecisiveness of pursuers
