I think you can get the same in long distance running. Runners with a better sprint kick want a slower race so they're still really sharp, and runners who are quicker with a great engine want the opposite. That can lead to situations where the fast finishers let a runner go but nobody goes to the front to pull them back

It has happened in middle / long distance running very occasionally
I recall that a pacemaker once carried on and beat Steve Ovett et al in, probably, a 1500m way back. He thought it was hilarious.

Tom Byers. He was hired last minute as a pacemaker and afterwards he managed to make some appearance money as 'the guy who...' for the rest of the season.

She’s French Canadian so I think Vall ee air? I may be wrong.
The one that gets me is Erica Magnaldi. All the media people pronounce it Mag-Naldi but it’s man-yaldi!

I'm no linguist but Magnaldi seems obvious and I coudn't work out why they were saying Vall ee air ez in commentary. I assumed they knew best though.

I refuse to believe that Rob Hatch got either of them wrong.
They have been getting Kasia Niewiadoma wrong for years so it's no great surprise.

I'm getting a feeling that there should be a grave accent in there. Vallières. Instinctively I would go for "valli-air" if that accent was there. But I couldn't necessarily explain why because it's so long since I studied French. Isn't that what a grave accent does? I may be completely wrong.
