My girlfriend tried to buy some of these today from our LBS. The bloke behind the counter told her that they don't really make them any more and such tyres were only used on old bikes. I told her he was talking bollocks. Am I right?

That's what I thought. It just seemed a bit odd him saying they were practically obsolete when I was fairly sure they're not.

"They don't really make them any more." = "I have none in stock and can't be bothered ordering any."

Or he was thinking of the old 26 x 1 1/4inch (32-597) as used on old roadster bikes?

Hubgearfreak and TheDoctor are right with where the confusion might be.

26 by one point two five is a current mtb size of which there are lots of slick options.

However 26 by one and a quarter is entirely a different size and was used on old British touring bikes. These are increasingly difficult to source.

Specialized fatboys are definately a good deal / buy: rode them for years on an MTB !

I'd reckomend them with my soul.

If the LBS was any good at it's job he would have established what the customer wanted and sourced some tyres. No excuse, confused customer or not.

Vredestein Perfect Moiree for me too. 26 x 1.3

AH. That'll be it. The Schwalbe tyre she actually bought is much bigger than the old tyre.

It's my fault then. I told her I thought the tyre she wanted was "twenty six by one and a quarter". I suppose I'll have to go back to the shop and eat humble pie.
