Having recently manage to cut the lead of the hedge trimmer (doh), I purchased a permaplug 3 pin lead connector, similar as seen below, but upon undoing the screws, I expected the casing to split in half where I could happily wire away - unfortunately, the casing seems to stay as one unit, so I am confused as to how this work.

Help would be great!

Completely remove the screw and then the casing slides back up the flex, exposing the innards.

The next question is "will he wire the male part to the appliance or the cable leaving the exposed pins with 240V on them??" ^_^

Luckily I have thought that one through.

Inside the wire there are two cabels, blue and brown, inside the connector there is N,E and L. I assume that the brown goes to the line and the blue goes to the neutral, and the earth gets left lonely on its own?

That is your only option if there is no earth in the flex, you have got it right with the blue=N brown=L.

One of the qualified electricians on here will be along to say if you should or should not replace the flex with 3 core, I am not familiar enough with the (17th) edition regs unfortunately.

its an appliance . not covered by 17th edition. thats fixed installs in buildings.

the appliance will very likely be double insulated (class II) or whatever they want to call it these days. so there is no need for an earth look for the box in box symbol .

as an aside an easy way for people to remember how to wire a plug is the second letter of the core colour tells you where to go.
