true story - they made a pistol that fired 6 live rounds before it fell apart...amazing technology but slightly worrisome too, no?

These 3D printers use ABS plastic to make the bits. I assume that they are making stuff which isn't going to bend or shatter as the models only have 30% the strength of injection moulded bits ..certainly not the firing mechanism or barrels...I'd not want to be within 50 yards of a fully plastic one being fired unless I were stood behind a brick wall.

glad someone spotted this before me.
hell the standard 3d printer stuff could be used for shrouds etc, but i wouldn't make a receiver out of abs. ye gods i'd be at least 100 yards away and behind sandbags before that was tested.
reminds me of the old jolly roger cookbook (now considered a terrorist handbook).
"To make plastic explosive start by boiling bleach until the white fumes stop..."
if you're stupid enough to do this you deserve whatever happens to you. same with a "printed" gun.
when they can 3d print metal i'll worry.

The BBC news just showed a young man in Texas testing his 3D-printed handgun design at a firing range. He will be putting his plans on t'Interweb so that people living in places that have 'oppressive' gun controls can simply print their own!

I was thinking that the chances of the thing exploding in use were pretty high, but I suppose you could treat them as 'fire and forget' - use one once on 'the bad guy' then chuck it away and make another.
