3D Gun Printing?

A few of you, ColinJ, have touched on this already. This 3D printer pistol is worth only a few shots, it's not meant to come with a warranty. A normal issue pistol in the armed forces is the Colt 1911 or P226 Sig Sauer, both due to be replaced by the Glock 17. Your sidearm, a pistol, is a proper last ditch weapon. It's for when the s*** hits and you are very close to the enemy and for some reason your main weapon, for me a SA80, is unavailable (stoppage, mag change, who knows). A pistol is good for 25m at the very best, don't think Jack Bauer is real, real life is not like that.
So, although the technology is impressive to do this why would you want one ? The only reasons I can think of are bad ones or novelty value.

Also, there are some really, really poor weapon handling drills in that video.

In case it wasn't obvious ... I think it is a really bad idea to make guns more easily available, and making them yourself definitely achieves that!

Nope he didn't make an assault rifle, what he made was the magazine and the lower receiver. The lower receiver on the AR15 is considered to be the gun. This has a serial number and is on the licence. He had to add everything else to this , eg barrel, stock, trigger etc

I seem to recall reading that 3D printing can be used with titanium oxide powder to produce objects made from titanium.
This is also only just the beginning of a new technology and given how innovative technologies evolve at an astonishing pace nowadays it really doesn't bode well for any society.
Weapons of immense destructive power may well become available to anyone who wants them.

It's not the end of the world of course but like every development it will have a downside.

True. It is being done already. I saw two machines that could do just that at Liverpool Uni a few months ago.

This printed gun is no different from a zip gun. It will fire once or twice and will need to be at very close range. You can convert most hollow tubes of the right size into a one shot gun

3D printers, or at least a larger industrial version of them, have been used for a number of years with titanium oxide (as
mentioned above) or sintered steel to make plastic injection moulds. But, if you've got one of those, with the CAD/CAM and finishing system to make the components usable after manufacture; getting hold of the drawings would, I think, be a minor irritation.
