Just saw an ad for Sky 3D, which featured happy chappies watching 3D golf. Made me wonder whether the whole thing is the next talkies ('It'll never catch on.') or Betamax.

From what I've seen (in Which?, amongst others) it's not even close yet.
1. You have to wear special glasses, some of which are expensive
2. The 3D effect is not that brilliant, not as good as they look in the cinema
3. You need a very large (50"+) to be able to see the 3D anyway, anything smaller and it is largely unnoticeable

3D just isn't compatible with the way I watch tv. I generally don't sit and 'watch' tv, and when I do have it on, I'm not likely to be dedicating my eyes to the tv, I'm more likely to be reading or using the internet and will glance at the tv occasionally.

As I posted elsewhere, my idea of 3d involves particle chambers where objects can be constructed in real time and looked at from any angle (recreating the experience of watching a play at the theatre, for example). When they work out to do that, I'll watch it, but having to wear special glasses just to watch tv? - no thanks.

Not seen any as yet. However Sky seem to be pushing it in the same way they did with HD. TV manufacturers are starting to roll out 3D TVs.
I reckon its mostly marketing and as consumers we seem to be suckers for the latest shiniest gadgets. eg. I have a blu-ray player, 2 films on blu-ray and LOTS of DVD
10 years time? 3D will have come and been usurped by something else by then.

I think it's a hit.

If I was in the market for a new TV, and I had the money, I'd probably get one.
I think they are the future, personally.

Sat and watched some 3D TV in Selfridges in Brum. My son forced me.

You need a HUGE screen. 60" minimum. The whole kit could come in at £10,000.

Was in a boozer yesterday and they had a 3D tv showing the golf. I had a watch (with the glasses of course) and to be honest I wasn't really overwhelmed and the general consensus of others watching was the same as me.

Gadget Show - Channel 5 8:00pm are having a look at them tonight. They do get a bit excited about every new piece of kit that appears though so not really expecting an unbiased view.

Not convinced. Depends what you have television for and as others have said it has to be a large television to be effective. My viewing these days is limited to small doses of specific programmes and if I ever do sit down and watch anything I tend to be asleep within 20 minutes. I can do that with a 'normal' television. ;)

I'm sure some people will go for it. I'd be more impressed if it was producing a colour hologram that was genuinely 3D rather than a tacky imitation involving wearing glasses and having a massive TV.

Next time I need a new TV (some years yet, I hope) I'm planning on getting a smaller one not a larger one.

The next drawback is of course having to pay Sky's massive subscription charges to receive it and a total lack of watchable content once you have.

Bloody hell, I just looked out the window and discovered that the world is in 3D. I will not be partaking basically because Sky are using their usual saturation style advertising and just getting on my wick about it.

Watch as if you're actually there!!! I believe the Commonwealth Games coverage also includes a free dengue fever infection to give the ful experience
