I think it'll mostly be pubs and cinemas partaking in such events. You'll get a few enthusiasts at home.

I don't think something can really be mainstream until there is the content. For example with HD a crucial sticking point is having BBC1 through to channel Five in HD. After four years even with HD we're still a month away from BBC1 HD, two years from BBC2 HD and some undefined amount of time away from Channel 4 and Five HD being released from their contracts with sky, find the bandwidth and available to more on some platforms.

Thankfully as someone who tends to buy new toys as soon as they come out, I can safely say that 3D TV will not be one of those toys. Lazy right eye means I can't use the glasses. I also tend not to see things in 3D anyway and cannot judge distance etc other than by experience and perspective.

I already have a 3D television. Well, 4-D actually. That is, it's a box which occupies three dimensions in space and one dimension in time, in my living room, so it must be...

As for stereoscopic TV imagery (which is what the correct pedantic word is), well it's been tried already. Way back in the 1960s or even 1950s it was, glorious B&W, on Blue Peter I think. Split screen. Kids had to make themselves a viewer out of cereal boxes, toilet rolls, glue, etc. etc., all in time-honoured BP fashion. Didn't catch on....

3D just isn't compatible with the way I watch tv. I generally don't sit and 'watch' tv, and when I do have it on, I'm not likely to be dedicating my eyes to the tv, I'm more likely to be reading or using the internet and will glance at the tv occasionally.

Me too. Also I wear spectacles all of the time and the idea of wearing over spectacles to see the TV is plain silly.

Now if they can make it appear 3D without the viewer using an artificial aid it may become more than a gimmick.

Not in its current form. FLickery as hell in the peripheral vision and the effect is actually quite odd in some cicumstances, not really 3D , but more a series of cardboard cut-outs placed at different distances to the camera.

I think they'd be better off getting everything HD first.

I can't see it taking off - they've been trying for years - remember those blue and red plastic lensed glasses at the cinema (like a pair of quality street wrappers stuck on thin cardboard 'specs')?

It's basically a visual "trick" and you'll never get the quality you see in HD in 3D. Gimmick that's been tried and failed time and again.

Give me a good story in 2D HD any day ...

Cheers,
Shaun

oh yeah, no we dont..

gunna be a long time coming, and i dont see the glasses version being anything other than a gimmic...

personally would prefer em to waste that bandwidth on decent SD tv.... the cycling on bbc1 saturday was a case in point *horrible* artifacts

Watch as if you're actually there!!! I believe the Commonwealth Games coverage also includes a free dengue fever infection to give the ful experience
I bet the empty seats look really impressive in 3-D! ;)

We're also one month and one hour away from BBC1 HD+1.
We haven't even got standard definition Freeview or Channel 5 here let alone HD or 3-D! (Terrestrial TV.)

3-D tv?

Blimey.

I'm still trying to get my head around there being a BBC2.

Is it in colour?

No, it uses Baird 30 lines.

Upgrade to High Definition 405 lines Black and White in 6 years time, but only in London.

(Yes, 405 lines was called High Definition TV when it was young)

Does that nice Mr Kendall still read the news?

Good lord, he was on telly a few weeks back, on that "Young Ones" thing where they got some old celebs to live together, and made them all 10 years younger, or something.

Not bothered about 3D myself, not even bothered about HD. I can see all I need to see in standard. In fact, I even do without colour...
