Did I imagine it, or did somebody post on here that they were going to cycle across Europe (may have been just Spain) and were budgeting on 4 Euros a day for food?

You read my CG blog.

No, I only use this forum regularly, I spent 10 eu a day on food via supermecados and a spork, somebody was going to try for 4 eu, I wanted to know how they got on, but forgot, until today, now I can't remember anything.

Impossible in Switzerland. 4 Euros (5 chf). Won't even get you a drink and a sandwich.

Though to Switzerlands credit you can hire a bike for free in some cities.

On my last tour I met a German living off either 5 or 10 euro a day (can't remember). During the couple of days I joined him he was living off ('out of'?) a catering size bag of cheap museli - did not look much fun (althoughI did buy him a few beers and a decent hot meal)

Buy a cup of cafe con leche for 1 euro 20 or a local and you also get a ham and cheese toastie or a hot dog and popcorn in Cafe Lim in Santiago de Compostela.

I wouldn't try to eat out on 4 euros but I definitely could live on it from Spain's supermarkets.

I'm sure it would be very very tight but am sure it could be done if you free camp and live on pasta/tinned tomatoes and don't drink. A bit more would clearly help. Inter-railed at the end of the 70s on £7 a day but that included the occasional dodgy pensione.

s7ephanie, think of cheap supermarket food, or Aldi/Lidl fare. It could be done for €4 a day but it would be nought more than subsistence living.

Personaly , I wouldn't do it. One of the delights of France is fresh baked baguette and pastries, etc and I couldn't imagine going withOUT that experience.
