I wouldn't do it these days ,head would quite easily overrule legs! I think the Avocet 30 I had then went to 63.5mph and then --.- Had a 54 chainring and 11 sprocket, I think. Slowing down was rather hairy!

Coming down the Westbury White Horse hill I reckon you could easily hit 50mph without pedalling at all on a road bike. I've done over 45 on my MTB with a bent derailleur hanger ensuring I couldn't pedal. Overtook a fella on a moped/scooter, too! It's about 1¼-1½ miles of downhill. Scary, but

My 50mph's were freewheeled . Never had a gear big enough for >35mph .

My top speeds have been freewheeled - usually run out at 40.

55 mph a month ago coming off Woodhead, and about 60 coming into Betsw-y-coed about 14/15 years ago (in a bunch of us).

55 has been my fastest in recent years - usually upto 45 round here.

it's fairly easy to hit 55 dropping off the snake into glossop.
Take that sentence out of this context, and nobody would have a clue what it means! I like this sentence.

I reckon that in order to avoid sheer naked terror, anything above 45 mph is probably recumbent trike territory.
Or perhaps a toilet with wheels...
