4th day without gas

And im freezing.

No gas for 4 days, so no heating and no hot water. I can't believe how cold the house is without central heating. We are using 2 Delonghi Dragon heaters and sleeping in pyjamas under 2 quilts. Minus 5 outside and ice on the road so commute is a nightmare but first time for a while I have looked forward to getting to work so I can get warm.

Our boiler died on Saturday and conditions in Belfast are much the same as your part of the world. Hard to believe it could get so cold indoors. Whole family slept in one bed last night with 2 quilt covers.

Luckily got a friendly engineer out this afternoon and the heat is working again. Was off work today and actually felt like I wanted to go in as it was so cold at home.

Geeze I can sympathise with you on that one, minus eight outside I believe, we have no heating at all. Least I have the emmersion heater for the hot water

Went to tesco today and bought some fan heaters, better than nothing and at the moment, no ice on the inside of our windows

I don't know what we would do without gas, we don't have central heating, but rely heavily on our gas fire, which is the only viable source of heat in our house. We do have storage heaters but they have gone cold by the time we get in from college and work.

We have a gas cooker but I'm sure we could use the microwave to heat up a meal if something went wrong.

Last year my electricity kept tripping (would stay on for 5 minutes, then off for an hour or so before deigning another 5 minutes) and it took five days for them to figure out what was wrong. Problem is, we needed electricity to keep the oil fire working cos it needed a pump to pump the oil through. Yikes... that was a bad 5 days. And I'm scared of the dark just to add to the trauma :-s

I can certainly sympathise Ceedee.

When I first moved into my house we had a snowy winter. Most of the rotten sash windows didn't shut and there was no ceiling on the top floor so the rattley slates were visible from my bed, the floor boards were loose, there was no insulation and no heating. The wind came in through the slates and out through the windows. I had icicles and sheet ice on the inside of the glass.

It was noticably colder inside the house then it was outside as the house is the north side of a pair of semi's so didn't even see any direct sunlight.

I slept fully clothed and with a trench coat and hat under two duvets, a pile of blankets and the rest of my coats.

It was three years before I got new windows in and a ceiling.

Things are a little better now, got heating and double glazing but the ceiling is down again while I refurbish the top floor. Fortunately I don't need to sleep on the top floor until it is done.

In the end we took the front off it, opened a hot tap and stuck a lighter in there to get hot water, we were so desperate. Obviously we managed not to blow the house up and in the meantime had to resort to fan heaters and the gas fire before shelling out a grand for a new boiler. It reduced me to tears on several occassions.

We rarely use the heating. We sleep under two duvets as a matter of course and wear more jumpers if it's cold. It's snowing outside here and the heating isn't on. Must be my Yorkshire upbringing.

Well I'm sitting here doing the same - working under two duvets in some warm clothes. It's OK as long as I stay in the same room and keep having warm drinks. What a skinflint...! Actually I quite like it.

That's what I meant by "my Yorkshire upbringing". Nothing to do with greater tolerance of cold, I'm just a tight bugger.
