It was 18 - 6 after 46 minutes, a fair reflection of how poor we were

We missed opportunities, lacked discipline and paid for it. That's pretty hopeless in my book.

Things may have been different if Maitland had stayed on the park. Or if Joubert hadn't wanted to give Ireland everything.
Perhaps he didn't like being shouted at by Kiwis Scotsmen for the first half hour? I find it hard, having reffed myself, to accept accusations, however mild, of bias in an official.

You obviously never saw Roger Quittenton referee a Gloucester match.

There's a grand total of one Kiwi in the current Scotland squad, so I'm not entirely sure why you're trying to turn Scotland into New Zealand's development team.

Cos he knows nothing so generalises and attaches his prejudices to something he's guessing at? Maybe.

Anyway, it's good to see that someone at Scotland Rugby Facebook page has a sense of humour; when they said there was a delay in the team being announced for the England game due to assessing injuries, and asked what team people would pick to play England, someone replied "France" and they responded with a "Well played sir!"

Reminiscing about my triumphant appearance against Big Boys Oratory reminded me of a bit from Clive James's Unreliable Memoirs. I couldn't find my copy, so I got one off ebay. This is the bit I remembered, describing an encounter with the First Grade's Reg Gasnier 'already tipped as the brightest schoolboy prospect in years':

Maybe he's just mad that England have got two. And an Aussie. And a Saffa. And a trio of ze Germans?!

Always good to see a bit of humour used on official social media communications. I don't follow them, but I've seen a couple of crackers from Tesco in the past.

But no Dutchmen. Unlike Scotland.

I think is shameful we can't pick a side of real English men rather than rejects from the Tri-Nations.

I see England have picked the same squad to face Scotland. They'll be quaking in their boots...

...about the bollocking they'll get from Lancaster if they don't win by a stack.

Brandane

The Costa Clyde rain magnet.

He must be the guy they always interview on TV then, I thought we had a few Kiwis too. But then I don't really follow rugby. Especially while England are about to give us a mauling.

We need him to provide us with smoke to keep us in reasonable spirits.

The problem for both countries is that we just don't seem to have an infrastructure for developing youth, or even encouraging kids to get involved with sports. I'm not a parent, but when I hear those I know who are talking about their kids medal in a non competitive sports day I despair.

@Brandane - that would be Shaun Maitland. Who hobbled off against Ireland and won't be seen again this tournament.
One of the coaches at my club – the U12 coach - is a young man in his early 20s. He was on the books at London Scottish until he was 18 when it was time for the club to hand out some pro-contracts. He told me that at that point the club brought in a few South Pacific players who got the contracts. He didn’t get one. He said it knocked him back for a year or 2 when he did nothing but got his life back on track. I asked him how he felt about the overseas players coming in to take his position, and he was accepting of it. His attitude was that in professional rugby you just have to be the best of the best or you’re not moving on, and that he just wasn’t good enough.
Very common experience at the semi-pro level locally with saffers, kiwis and ozzies making up the bulk of the foreign imports. Short sighted in my view. Most of 'em only seem to stay for two seasons.

You and all the other Scots here predicting doom for your gallant boys in blue aren't fooling us you know. What GrumpyGregry says in post 43 is spot on!
