I lived most of my life in South Africa

A restaurant / pub in the village where I lived, decided to have mondays as a prawn night .... eat as much as you want for R15 (equivalent to approx £10 in todays UK money)

The owner of the pub restaurant was a mate of mine and he decided to try and get customers into the restaurant on monday nights, as it was the quietest night of the week for his business. The prawns that he served were Mozambique prawns (large compared to the ones you buy here in the UK) ... The prawns here in the UK are what we called shrimps

He grilled them Portuguese style with peri peri and served them with a platter of home made fries and a choice of garlic sauce or peri peri sauce

He was hoping that people would get full by eating the fries, and then also order beers, wine, dessert etc (The special deal was only on prawns served with chips and everything else was billed separately)

News spread fast, and a month later, he stopped offering the 'eat as much as you want' .... He said that he never saw so many pigs in his life .... they were going to bankrupt him ....

some people were eating 70-80 prawns a sitting and not even touching the fries.... he said that some people were so bloated that they were actually sweating and struggling to walk

I've only been like that once, whilst on honeymoon, in USA/Canada, back in 1998
We ended up at an 'All You Can Eat' place, somewhere on the outskirts of (I think) Boston

I ended up having to undo trousers, practically waddle out, & I didn't eat the following day............

I hope that the cafe does well, but fear it will be abused.

There are a couple of 'all you can eat' type places locally and the sheer gluttony / wasted food you see from some people is beyond shameful.
As someone once said, it's an offer, not a challenge!

If you can spend an half an hour for £1.80, have a couple of coffees and a snack, what's not to like. The owners say it makes a profit and good luck to them. Cheaper than a single drink in most cafes.

I'm not sure they have got their sums right. I understand the whole all you can eat concept at restaurants, as they rely on for every greedy individual there will be ten ordinary guy who takes his share and some less. This seems a bit less thought out in my opinion, but good luck, if it was near me I would certainly give it a go.

I went to an all you can eat place in Thailand where you picked the raw ingredients and it was cooked at your table. Large signs were put up stating the owners reserved the right to weigh leftovers and the customer charged an additional fee dependent on weight..

Would've stopped people in South Africa, in the earlier post, leaving the fries and just consuming the prawns.

my brother visited the USA (Texas) this year on holiday .... he says that he ordered off the Kiddies menu .... the burgers are ginormous, you get half a kg of fries, and milkshakes are nearly 1 litre

no wonder that some of the kids in the USA are overweight ... he could not even finish a kiddies menu there .... he says the same applies to Pizza etc

I live in an area where people are considered careful with money, I was once paid with 3 turnips for doing a windscreen repair for a local guy, this is a lot more than some want to pay. Now I can imagine an eat what you can for 6p a minute lasting about 15 minutes before going bankrupt araound these parts.

Tbags on washing lines is not a sight you see in many other counties.

I remember on 1 trip to Florida they realised the Baconator with the tag line 1000 calories in a bun like some kind of boast.

There are a couple of places near me in Denmark that do all you can eat buffets. I can eat, but after two platefuls I am struggling. They do great food and the premises are excellent. The places are always full.

I keep looking at this (or the York branch ) & wondering about visiting - & not eating for a couple of days afterwards

There's a café in Belfast that operates an 'honesty box'. There are no prices for coffees, buns, soup etc, you just pay what you feel you want to. There are always people who'll take the mick, but I think it's a great idea. I seen this 6p a minute café online a few days ago and glad to see they're making a profit.
