7/8 Speed Nexus hubs; Cable length

We've just repaired a bike with an 8 speed Nexus hub; according to the information I could find (and that took a while) the distance from cable outer to the crimp9ng bolt should be 101mm, but the gears didn't work until we used the / gear jig to set the length which is 94mm. Now it works perfectly.

I'm guessing Shimano changed the specs for 8 speed hub systems at some point to confuse bike mechanics. Does anyone know when, and if it's possible to identify the hubs?
