whats the next one - Loopy Llama??? (Sorry...)

Seriously though - What is going to be new in the new release, anything in particular you are looking forward to? Or just the fact of having a mess with it? I have installed and used it before - in an attempt to learn Linux and how it works etc (Tried some time back with Suse aswell). The last Ubuntu install seemed quite good with the visual effects etc. However, I didn't seem to get anything out of it that couldn't be done with Windows, I am curious what regular users of it find it gives them over Windows, I'm guessing the lower risk of virus's and malware may be one?

I used the beta (or was it the alpha???) for a while... and it was crashing all over the place ;)

That's not a criticism, btw. It's to be expected from a pre-release version. I fully anticipate the release version of KK to be fully functional from the word go.

I fear Ubuntu becoming the MS of the the linux world though (I'm talking software, not corporation!)... that is, dangerously bloated.

Why use the new Ubuntu, the full release versions are very stable, the new version will boot faster than before tester of the later betas have been getting 15 sec boot times! Which for a laptop user is important.

As for bloat, it is not Ubuntu per se that is supposedly getting bloated it is the Linux kernel that has been accused of "bloated and huge", more worryingly is that it is Linus Torvalds who has made the accusation. We never heard Bill Gates saying that Windows is doing down the pan, but maybe he should have warned us about Vista! The difference is windows bloat is caused by commented out code, whereas the in Linux it is due to the addition of new functionality...

For fun! And, more seriously, to help in testing. That's why it's made available and what the linux community is all about!

Linux it is due to the addition of new functionality...

I know WHY the bloat is there, and appreciate the reason, but I'm still fearful of Ubuntu trying to be one solution for ALL platforms and environments; like Windows tries to be. I'd like to see a more intelligent install that gives you something more tailored for your particular platform (kind of like the netbook remixes you see, but more so).

I seem to remember when I installed Suse, there were endless options of what to install, similar to Win95/98 etc actually.

I wonder if they stopped that to try to make it more user friendly? Is there no Advanced install options?

I am on 9.04 (Jaunty). When the new 9.10 (koala) comes out I'll be waiting, and watching the Ubuntu Forums. I'll wait about a month before deciding to install or not, giving it time for any problems to come to light and for solutions to be found, I'm not good with the technical side of these things. I was using 8.10 and it was working well, then 9.04 came out and I upgraded immediately, then spent a lot of time over about a fortnight chasing problems. I have 9.04 nicely sorted at the moment so I'll wait.

I have been using the Beta version of KK for about three weeks now, boot up times have improved, the Add/Remove programs has been replaced by the Ubuntu Software Center, this also has a much better look and feel. The Software Center is going to be developed to encompass all software handling including system updates and eventually will offer commercial software.

Forgot to add this from the Ubuntu website
"The Ubuntu Software Center is a graphical utility for package management in Ubuntu. In version 1, it will build on the basic philosophy of Add/Remove Applications and make it even easier to use. In later versions, it will grow to replace Synaptic, gdebi, some parts of the Computer Janitor, and possibly Update Manager; and in version 3, it will offer commercial software"

For the present I am still using Jaunty Jackalope (9.04), but have taken the opportunity to upgrade to Grub 2, as the upgrade path from Jaunty to Koala doesn't include this (it is only with the full install.
